The Art of Laundry Hang-Ups
is really a ‘fun schway’ photography book that can entertain you, put a smile on your face as well as tell the story of a lost art, laundry hang-ups.
It actually wasn’t that long ago, that the majority of today’s parents grew up with a backyard full of clotheslines and portable wooden clothes dryers that displayed a family lifestyle from their very personal dedicates to winter outer wear. Wooden clothes pegs held each item in place on the line, connecting them by groups of colour. It was a neighbourhood thing. From baby clothes to grandparents sleepwear, no one shamed their wardrobe as damaged or ripped items hung next to a ‘prized’ new outfit.
As I traveled around the world, I noticed that many countries and families still regarded this art as a necessity to their lifestyle. But for me, I noticed something else, and had to take another look.
I have studied, lived and taught the art of Feng Shui, the mystical movement of energy, most of my life. Here was an opportunity to view this lost art with new ‘light’. You see, colour, shapes, and materials are all part of the Feng Shui make-up. Red carries the energy of confidence, while white sheds auras of purity. There’s a secret story behind each laundry hang-up. When there is a windy day, and the items are twisted and knotted on a line, making it difficult for the wind to blow-out and cleanse the negative energy, it warns that one should hold off on making any important decisions that day… as things were not moving in a positive, flowing manner.
As everything is alive, connected and changing, it is important to love what you wear and care for it. If you purchase a used item or wear a borrowed shirt, you never know if it carries negative energy from the previous owner. The same goes for items you buy for your home or workplace. They should be special to you and worn regularly to get maximum benefits. It’s not about the quantity, but the quality. All items need to he hung-out to blow in the breeze, bleach in the sun and wash in the rain to clear away any previous ill issues or unwanted mishaps.
Just as one lights a candle to cleanse a room after an unwanted visitor or heated argument, by hanging out the table cloths, draperies, rugs and other household items to cleanse in Mother Nature, positive energy begins to return and things can become calm.
The more I traveled, it became clearer that in all the countries, fashion and household items were universal as they were pretty much the same in Malta as in California. Colour, shapes, sizes and materials vibrated and danced in the daylight as if whistling their own tune. I had to admire this art of Laundry Hang-ups worldwide. Good Fun Schway!
Entertain yourself and consider this a gift to others… The Art of Laundry Hang-ups just can’t be lost!
